Medical-Surgical - Oncology Unit Options

As an Oncology Nurse Resident, you may work in one or more of the following departments:

Bone Marrow Transplant

  • Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center partner
  • Orlando's first comprehensive adult and pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) program
  • 10-bed BMT Unit and 8-bed Oncology PCU equipped with state-of-the-art technology
  • Orlando's only inpatient BMT unit
  • A multitude of training courses available to prepare nurses for BMT work
  • Self-scheduling
  • Primarily patients with Leukemia, Hodgkin's, Multiple Myeloma, neuro cancers, gynecological cancers, pediatric BMT
  • Nursing care ranges from medical surgical to acute intensive care

Adult Inpatient Hematology/Oncology

  • Patients with multiple diagnoses, including solid tumors, hematologic malignancies, sickle cell anemia, as well as brain and central nervous system metastases
  • Collaborative environment with nurses working closely with oncology physicians, clinical nurse specialists, social workers and case managers
  • Focus on countering the threat of cancer and promoting quality of life
  • Opportunity to strongly impact patient's quality of life by placing an emphasis on controlling symptoms and treatment

Outpatient Oncology

  • 36-bed facility featuring six private beds and 30 beds that are arranged in modular configurations with five bays to each module
  • Services range from blood and blood component transfusion, IV therapy, outpatient chemotherapy, medical surgical observation for patients who meet criteria, PICC catheterization insertion, and more

Pediatric Hematology/Oncology

  • State-of-the-art inpatient treatment for pediatric patients
  • Family-centered care in a child/adolescent friendly environment
  • Special pediatric and pediatric oncology training required

Graduating from an accredited nursing school? Searching for a confidence-building mentoring experience? We offer the ideal program for you. Our year-long paid nurse residency is an ideal professional development option for recent nursing school graduates who want to specialize in:

You'll advance through three distinct phases that will expand your skills and increase your independence. As a resident, you'll:

  • Enjoy two to four months of precepted training that includes classroom learning and clinical orientation with a preceptor (Phase I)

  • Benefit from one to three months of a full clinical assignment under the guidance of a resource nurse who will be your personal mentor (Phase II)

  • Attain additional experience and knowledge through a five to six month clinical assignment, as well as five additional classroom days for your specialty (Phase III)

By the end of your program, you'll demonstrate advanced-beginner clinical competence in the areas of:

  • Patient care/delegation
  • Documentation
  • Nursing process
  • Interpersonal communication
  • Pathophysiology
  • Professional accountability

Programs begin during the following months:

Medical Surgical Nurse Residencies:
January, March, June, July, August and October

Critical Care and Emergency Care Nurse Residencies:
February, July and October
