Florida Hospital offers a wide selection of choices and settings for
recent nurse graduates who wish to complete their Critical Care Nurse
Residency in an Intensive Care Unit setting. Below is a brief description
of your options.
Florida Hospital Orlando - Multi-System Intensive Care Unit
- 16-bed unit
- Medical and surgical diagnoses, including sepsis, respiratory failure,
renal transplantation and vascular surgery
Florida Hospital Orlando - Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)
- 28-bed CVICU with a 16-bed overflow unit for post-open-heart surgery
and/or vascular surgery patients
- The opportunity to provide life-saving care immediately following
open-heart surgery
- Fast-paced, challenging setting
- Nurse mentor program for new graduates
- Unique development and education enhancement opportunities
- Multiple scheduling options
- Community-focused team also works on mission-related projects like
Backpack for Kids, holiday food drives, Adopt-a-Family, etc.
CVICU Nurse Residents work with one of the most experienced, distinguished
cardiology nursing teams in the nation. After all, Florida Hospital:

Florida Hospital Orlando - Coronary Intensive Care Unit (CICU)
- Largest dedicated Cardiac Care Unit in the Southeast and one of the
largest in the nation
- 32-bed unit that's divided into two self-sufficient units of 12 and
20 beds respectively
- Fast paced, progressive and high tech unit
- Nurses specialize in caring for complex cardiac patients
- Lowest mortality rates for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients
in the nation, according to Apache ratings
- One of the lowest length of stay (LOS) rates for AMI patients, according
to Apache ratings
- Special nursing skills include balloon pump therapy, ventilator support,
continual renal replacement therapy, ventilator support, continual renal
replacement therapy and critical thinking abilities
- Acuity-based staffing and 2:1 patient to nurse ratio
- Multidisciplinary team includes nurses, physicians, pharmacists, respiratory
therapists, chaplains and case managers
- Support of one charge nurse per unit without patient assignments so
she or he can assist staff, Respiratory Care Team stationed at the unit,
24/7 health unit coordinators and 24/7 monitor technicians

Florida Hospital Orlando - Neuro Critical Care (NCC) Unit
- A highly technical monitoring and nursing care setting
- 16-bed acute nursing care unit treats patients with both medical and
surgical acute neurological problems
- Advanced tools, include continuous cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring,
ICP monitoring, burst suppression monitoring and ventilator support
- Affiliated with 39-bed Neuroscience Unit (NSU) & Stroke Management
and Rehabilitation Team (SMART) Unit
- Neuroscience Unit (NSU) cares for patients with neurological or complex
spinal injury or surgery.
- SMART provides early diagnosis and preventing trauma for patients
who may be having a brain attack
Because the NCC and NSU/SMART are closely partnered with the Florida
Hospital Neuroscience Institute, you can rest assured that your Nurse
Residency will familiarize you with cutting edge technology and advanced
therapies for neurologic disorders. The Florida Hospital Neuroscience
Institute is:
- One of the most comprehensive institutes of its kind in the Southeast
- Treats more stroke patients and performs more neurosurgeries (approximately
2,300 annually) than any other hospital system in the state

and World's Report's America's Best Hospitals for Neurology and Neurosurgery.
Florida Hospital Altamonte - Intensive/Critical Care
- 17-bed unit
- Approximately 50% of admissions are cardiac-related
- Hemodynamic monitoring, ventilators and occasional intra-aortic balloon
pump therapy
Florida Hospital Apopka - Intensive/Critical Care
- 4-bed unit
- Medical patients requiring ventilation, cardiac and thermodynamic
monitoring
Florida Hospital East Orlando - Coronary Intensive Care Unit (CICU)
- 12-bed combined medical and surgical unit
- Variety of patients, ranging from multi-system disorders like acute
coronary conditions to multi-organ failure
- Some patients require advanced hemodynamic monitoring, ventilators
and intra-aortic balloon pump therapy

- Patients with the most complex medical needs
- Cardiac, pulmonary, multiple trauma, unstable post-operative, etc.

- 100 universal beds that are capable of meeting all levels of acuity
Winter Park Memorial Hospital - Intensive Care Unit
- 18-bed, state of the art unit
- Patients with the most complex medical needs
- State-of-the-art technology includes advanced hemodynamic monitoring,
ventilators, intracranial invasive monitoring, and intra-aortic balloon
pump therapy.
Note: All Critical Care Nurse Residents must be ACLS-certified or
obtain certification after employment. Additional requirements may vary
between specific critical care units.

mentoring experience? We offer the ideal program for you. Our year-long
paid nurse residency is an ideal professional development option
for recent nursing school graduates who want to specialize in:
You'll advance through three distinct phases that will expand your
skills and increase your independence. As a resident, you'll:
- Enjoy two to four months of precepted training that includes
classroom learning and clinical orientation with a preceptor (Phase
I)
- Benefit from one to three months of a full clinical assignment
under the guidance of a resource nurse who will be your personal
mentor (Phase II)
- Attain additional experience and knowledge through a five to
six month clinical assignment, as well as five additional classroom
days for your specialty (Phase III)
By the end of your program, you'll demonstrate advanced-beginner
clinical competence in the areas of:
- Patient care/delegation
- Documentation
- Nursing process
- Interpersonal communication
- Pathophysiology
- Professional accountability
